Training Requirements and Career and Technical Education (CTE) Funding Criteria for Applied Academics

2005-2006

Applied Math/OSPI Recommendations for Initial and Continuing

Applied Math Certification Requirements For

Applied Math Career & Technical Funding

1.      Initial Training: A teacher must have successfully completed the Initial Training (offered each summer by the Washington Applied Math Council) and the Fall & Spring In-services (offered during the year following participation in the Initial Training) to be certified. The Fall and Spring in-services are offered in collaboration with OSPI. (The certification remains solely with the teacher and not the school or district.)

2.      Fall & Spring Inservice Participation: A teacher must be given time to attend both the Fall and Spring one day in-services provided by the Washington Applied Math Council.  (These in-services are offered currently at the ESD 113 in Olympia for the West Side and Spokane Community College for the East Side.)  Carl Perkins and CTE state funds may be used to pay for teacher’s expenses.

3.      Continued Funding Requirements:  After participation in the Initial and Spring/Fall training, a teacher must attend either a WAMC/OSPI Summer Conference Training at least once every five years or accumulate a total of forty clock hours by attending the Fall/Spring one day in-services over a five year period to acquire continued certification. (Summer Training must occur within a two-year period prior to CTE re-certification.)   Additionally the teacher must meet the minimum requirements/ expectations as determined by the Washington Applied Math Council to meet the CTE Funding Requirements.  This will ensure that all Applied Math certified teachers are aligned with the WASL mathematics testing, have updated curriculum that is aligned with the EALRs, and be aware of other changes in the requirements. Carl Perkins and CTE state funds may be used to pay for teacher’s expenses.

4.      Proof of Certification:  The district must provide OSPI/WAMC with the name, current school address, telephone number (home and work), and e-mail address for all teachers receiving funding for Applied Math prior to the start of the school year.  Districts must also provide a copy of valid vocational teaching certificate (CTE Certificate number).  Career & Technical Education Funding will stop unless the teacher training requirements are up-to-date.

5.   Number of Classes Allowed:  Up to three Initial Applied Math classes and one advanced Applied Math class may receive CTE enhanced funding at a ratio of 3 to 1 per school building.  Unlimited classes may be funded with approval from OSPI and the WAMC State Coordinator.  (Ex.:  4 -1st year (Initial); 1- 2nd year (Advanced); 1 – 3rd year (Advanced).)   Classes must align with the Framework for the GLE’s for Applied Math.  For a school to receive funding for Advanced Applied Math classes the teacher must have Advanced Certification.  (Obtainable by one additional Summer Conference.)  (For information concerning compliance contact Ron Noble)
